Starting your own business is terrifying.

It’s overwhelming, complicated, and at times, downright exhausting. But do you know what else it is? Completely life-changing.

For me, launching Designer Studios wasn’t just about building a brand; it was about building a life that worked for me and my family. As a mum in New Zealand, the traditional 9-5 wasn’t going to cut it—not when I wanted to be there for school drop offs, pickups, sports days, sick days, and all the beautiful, messy in-between moments that come with raising a family. I knew I wanted something more, something that allowed me to do what I love while still being available and present for the people I love the most.

But let’s be real—starting a business is no small feat. When you take the leap into entrepreneurship, you suddenly realise you’re not just doing the thing you’re passionate about—you’re also the marketing team, the accountant, the social media manager, the customer service rep, and about 10 other job titles you never saw coming. It’s a learning curve like no other. There were moments (many moments) where I felt like giving up, where imposter syndrome crept in and self-doubt made itself comfortable, and it still does. But here’s what kept and keeps me going: freedom.

The freedom to choose the projects I work on. The freedom to collaborate with incredible entrepreneurs and small business owners who are just as passionate about their work as I am. The freedom to be present for my family without asking for permission. That kind of freedom is priceless.

Through Designer Studios, I’ve had the privilege of helping other small business owners bring their visions to life. Whether it’s through branding, website design, or just offering advice from one small business owner to another, I know firsthand what it takes to turn a dream into a reality. And trust me, I get it—running a business means wearing all the hats. But that’s also what makes it so rewarding.

If you’re sitting on the fence, wondering if you should take the leap into running your own business, know this: it won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. You’ll learn, you’ll grow, and you’ll build something that is truly yours. And the best part? You’ll get to do it on your terms.

So here’s to the dreamers, the doers, the small business owners who are figuring it out as they go. It’s scary, yes. But it’s also the most incredible thing you’ll ever do. And I’m right here, cheering you on every step of the way.

Stay Badass,

Caitlin
